Our main goal is to guarantee the mining industry's equitable and sustainable growth while optimizing its economic contribution to the local communities, environment, and promote nation’s economy. It was formed with an aim to serve as the state's means of engaging in mining activities.
SMCL is required to work on important resources and strategic minerals some of which are considered to be the national treasures. It mainly works with minerals such as quartzite, dolomite, gypsum, and coal.
SMCL was founded to address unfairness, environmental protection problems, and a lack of transparency among the private mining companies. According to the government's vision, SMCL would serve as an example of best practices in mining technology while conserving its natural ecosystem.
SMCL closely follow Bhutan's environmental protection laws, which are based on the Gross National Happiness (GNH) theory. To help local communities, this involves participating in Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and following to the environment-friendly practices.
There are range of challenges such as managing the high cost of transportation, obtaining regulatory clearances, recruiting qualified technical and professional human resources from geological industries and many more.
No, in accordance with our strict government rules, private firms also hold leases for non-strategic minerals and quarries, while SMCL operates critical strategic mines within the country.
Currently, our mining are operational in around 7 of the major mines in the country that include collecting resources such as Dolomite, Coal, Gypsum, Quartzite and many other.
We strive to stabilize domestic pricing of necessary mineral products, while assuring sustainable management of the nation's limited mineral resources, and producing income for the overall national budget.
