The State Mining Corporation Limited (SMCL) has constructed a 10-metre-high Jangchub Chorten at Phuntshopelri, Samtse, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives, reaffirming the Company’s commitment to preserving and promoting Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage, flourishing Buddhism, and fostering the well-being of all sentient beings.
The Rabney (consecration ceremony) of the chorten was held on 12 October 2026 and graced by Dasho Karma Yezer Raydi, Chairman of Druk Holding and Investments Limited (DHI). The ceremony was attended by local leaders, industrialists, and members of the community, reflecting the collective reverence for Bhutan’s spiritual traditions and cultural heritage.
Constructed at an approximate cost of Nu. 9.9 million, the chorten stands as a symbol of faith, peace, compassion, and spiritual well-being. Beyond its religious significance, the initiative reflects SMCL’s commitment to contributing to the social and cultural development of the communities in which it operates.
As a state-owned mining company, SMCL recognises that responsible mining extends beyond economic contribution to include social responsibility, environmental stewardship, and the preservation of Bhutan’s cultural and spiritual values. Through such initiatives, the Company seeks to contribute meaningfully to community well-being while supporting the preservation of the country’s unique cultural identity and living traditions.
The construction and consecration of the Jangchub Chorten marks a significant contribution by SMCL towards fostering harmony, spiritual enrichment, and collective well-being, dedicated to the well-being of all sentient beings.
